She graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and made her operatic debut in 1975 with the Glyndebourne Opera company as Agatha ("Der Freischütz"). In 1976 and 1977 she performed at the Glyndebourne Festival as Donna Anna ("Don Giovanni") and the Countess ("The Marriage of Figaro"). Also in 1975, she made her debut with the Welsh National Opera and Opera of Kent, and the following year with English National Opera.
In 1980, Plowright made her European debut, performing at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago and at the opera houses of Frankfurt and Bern. Also in 1980, she made her Royal Opera House Covent Garden debut as Ortlinde in "Die Walküre". On that stage she performed such roles as Donna Anna, Maddalena ("Andrea Chénier"), Senta ("The Flying Dutchman"), Leonora ("Il Trovatore"), Desdemona ("Otello"), and the title roles in "Aida", "Medea", and "Ariadne auf Naxos".
The singer's American debut took place in 1982 at San Diego Opera as Medora in the American premiere of the opera "Il Corsaro", and her La Scala debut in 1983 in the title role of "Suor Angelica".
